Chebyshev Theorem

Chebyshev Theorem Chebyshev theorem is collection of many theorems like Bertrands postulate, Chebyshev inequality, Chebyshev sum inequality, Chebyshev equioscillation theorem and prime number theorem. It was given by Pafnuty Chebyshev, a Russian mathematician. This theorem help to find what percent of the values will fall between the interval x1 and x2 for a given data set, where mean is given and standard deviation is known. We need to find the range Mean-k*SD, Mean+K*SD) where SD is standard deviation. Chebyshev theorem says that 1 (1/k-squared) of the measure will fall within the above calculated range. Example 1:- The 5 values given are given as 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. And standard deviation is given by 2. Find the Range in which 95 % value lies. Solution 1:-. Given 5 input values are as follows:- 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. So mean = (2+4+6+8+10)/5 = 30/5= 6 Given Standard deviation (SD) = 2 95 % of the values lie in between = (Mean- SD, Mean + SD) Therefore, 95 % of the values lie in between (6-2, 6+2) Hence 95 % of the values lie in between in (4, 8). Example 2:- The 5 values given are given as 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. And standard deviation is given by 1. Find the Range in which 95 % value lies. Solution 2:- Given 5 input values are as follows:- 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. So mean = (1+2+3+4+5)/5 = 15/5= 3 Given Standard deviation (SD) = 1 95 % of the values lie in between = (Mean- SD, Mean + SD) Therefore, 95 % of the values lie in between (3-1, 3+1) Hence 95 % of the values lie in between in (2, 4).

Passing it on English Listening Exercise Story Corp is a great resource for listening. They are a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of their lives. There is such an array of beautiful stories that I always get caught up listening to more than one story. In the Story Corp we used for this weeks English listening exercise, Thomas Weller explains how he started helping complete strangers on the side of the roads in Southern California, and how he believes in passing good deeds on.Listen to the interesting voice of Weller by clicking here, and then do the exercise.1. What year does he reference?2. I was youthful and ____ of _______. What does this phrase mean?3. What problem did he have? Who helped him?4. How does he pass it on?5.What does he carry on his rescue missions?6. Why did the muscle bound dude cry?7. So when I see somebody on twitter struggling about how to do something, I jus t help them.My parents help me every single day. I cannot use I use to if I mean something that happens frequently in present! I didnt know that. I get it now. Ill check out the link! Thanks!!

Mindfulness as a Vehicle for Improving Cognition Reducing Stress

Mindfulness as a Vehicle for Improving Cognition Reducing Stress Improving Academic Performance There’s been a lot of talk recently (in certain psychology or educational circles, at least) on the topic of mindfulness practice and its various benefits. What was once a feature of eastern philosophy/religion has grown into an increasingly Western and somewhat mainstream activity. Two of the most potentially powerful benefits of mindfulness practice include cognitive enhancement and stress-reduction. As a result, mindfulness has started to be implemented in school systems and curricula worldwide. But what is the practice of mindfulness, just how effective is it, and how can we reap the benefits by incorporating mindfulness into our lives? . “Mindfulness can be defined as the psychological capacity to stay willfully present with one's experiences, with a non-judgmental or accepting attitude, engendering a warm and friendly openness and curiosity” (Kabat-Zinn, 2005). This article explores the science behind mindfulness practice and its effects on academic performance and stress reduction along with a few helpful tips to incorporate mindfulness practice into your daily living. The general notion behind mindfulness involves present awareness. That is to say, being as fully aware of the present moment as possible. Another pillar of the practice is to be “non-judgmental” in the assessment of the current situation. The roots of such an exercise date back to over 2,500 years ago in Buddhist tradition (as well as the tradition of various other Eastern modalities). By bringing ones awareness to the present moment, one ceases to invest their energy into the past and the future, both of which are simply creations of one’s mind to begin with. While deliberation of future choices and pontification of prior events are necessary from time to time, it is no surprise to hear that all too many of us spend too much time and energy “inside our heads” in one of these two places. As a result, we relinquish our ability to savor and utilize the only moment that truly exists: the present. But how can this concept benefit the striving student achieve success? Well for o ne, it increases attention span. These techniques help steady the mind and train its attentional capacity, while also increasing its breadth of focus (Zenner,C et al., 2014). Increasing attention span and the ability to focus on complex information sounds like a poweful benefit for a student. Here’s a simple exercise one can utilize to develop a state of mindfulness and garner these benefits: Technique: The “Anchor” The first technique we are going to discuss is “the anchor”. Much like the anchor used by a boat or a ship to keep it in place among the current and the waves, we must utilize a simple anchor to hold our awareness in place in the present moment. A common method utilized is to make your breath the anchor. Why our breath? Because it’s something we constantly do, all the time, as long as we live. Bringing awareness into the present moment is simply achieved by “feeling” your senses and sensations all throughout your body. By mindfully feeling my fingers hit the keys on my keyboard, my body pressed against the couch, my puppy’s fur pressed up against me while she sleeps, I draw my attention out of my mind and into the present moment. Thus, in this anchoring to our breath method, we simply become hyper aware of our breath. Really feel the air enter your nostrils or mouth, feel the temperature of the air, feel its sensations as it fills up your lungs with oxygen, vitality and l ife. As you breath out, repeat the process and really bring awareness to how the breath feels. By attempting to do this for every breath, you will notice your conscious mind being more involved with your surroundings and the present state of matters instead of living in the past of the future. Expanding on the “Anchor” technique: Several other variations of this technique may be utilized to develop mindfulness. All these variations have the same common element of bringing ones attention to their five senses. This sensory hyperawareness is what is key to establishing awareness of what is going on around you instead of what is going on in your head. Eating: Mindfulness can be utilized whilst eating by truly savoring the texture, taste and other properties of the food. In modern society, eating is often paired with conversation, television, and other social or entertainment activities. However, in some eastern cultures, such as China, it is encouraged to simply focus on eating and digestion when consuming a meal. The idea is that the extra energy spent doing something in addition to eating, can be focused into actually eating, digesting and enjoying the meal. Thus, engaging our senses during eating can help invoke a stronger sense of mindfulness among the practitioner. Other techniques to build mindfulness: Yoga Meditation Body Scan exercises (a gradual sweeping of attention through the body (Zenner,C et al., 2014). It is recommended the practitioner engages in about 45 minutes of home practice in mindfulness a day to maximize the benefits gained (Zenner,C et al., 2014). Mindfulness in the Treatment of Anxiety Stress The reduction of evaluation anxiety and stress among students, particularly in higher education is potentially one of the most significant, academic benefits to mindfulness practice. A study evaluating 70 higher education students earning either their bachelor’s or master’s revealed reduction in both cognitive and emotional components of anxiety (Dundas,I. et al., 2016). Mindfulness in the Treatment of Mental Illness Disease States While current psychology attempts to treat diseased states of mind, Buddhist practices like mindfulness were used to cultivate positive mind states and promote mental well-being (Wallace,B.A. 2006). Today, the applications and the benefits of Mindfulness based practices have extended both into the clinic and the classroom. Indeed, the two also come together when discussing the benefit of mindfulness for children with learning disorders (e.g. ADHD) and social anxiety disorders. With almost a fifth of children between the ages of thirteen to eighteen experiencing some sort of severe mental illnesses, it is clear that some sort of impactful and therapeutic intervention is necessary (Zenner, C et al., 2014). To date, the advancements made in the cognitive and psychological fields around mindfulness have far outpaced their introduction in individual's lives and in Western society and school systems, so we can expect to see such practices expanding farther and becoming much more common place in our education system. The data reveals the positive influences of such therapies among a variety of students in a variety of situations. The benefits extend into the clinical realm by treating various disease states. In conclusion, mindfulness based practice is considered by many to be one of the newest and most revolutionary psyhchological tools in recent memory (even though the practice is almost 3,000 years old...) We are in an age where we are learning how to unlock the full potential of our minds and new advancements are emerging from ancient traditions and practices. Whether it's meditation, yoga or anchoring yourself in your breath, try incorporating a mindfulness practice into your life today and observe the benefits over time. Everything You Need to Know About Equal Pay Day

Everything You Need to Know About Equal Pay Day Image via: www.pexels.com Where did Equal Pay Day come from? The fight for equal rights between men and women has been a long and exhausting battle, dating all the way back to the 1800s. In 1848, the first Women’s Rights Convention took place. Hundreds of activists gathered together at this convention to fight for a woman’s right to education and employment, as well as the right to vote. Years later, the first organized labor advocacy group worked toward fighting for equal pay between men and women. Later, the Women’s Trade Union League was created to help improve wages and working conditions for women in the workforce. Almost a decade later, The Equal Pay Act was put into action requiring employers to pay men and women the same wages for doing the same work. After advocacy groups and legislations continued to fight for the equal rights between men and women, a silver lining reared its head in 2015, when the Paycheck Fairness Act was written. This comprehensive bill boosts the Equal Pay Act of 1963, but the battle still is not over! This is why Equal Pay Day exists! How can you celebrate Equal Pay Day? There are many ways to be an active celebrator of Equal Pay Day. First, you can contact your elected officials of your state and urge them to take action by passing the Paycheck Fairness Act. Be sure to spread the word among your friends and family and encourage them to do the same thing. Second, host an “unequal” sale of some sort, selling food or objects with a special price: 21 percent off for women and full price for men. Doing this will establish a dialogue between men and women, showing both sides why the pay gap is unfair. Lastly, do what every angry American does to spread the word about their problems and concerns: take it to the Internet! Ask journalistic publications to write about Equal Pay Day and its importance to society. The more coverage the day gets, the better. Image via: www.pixabay.com Why should you be a part of Equal Pay Day? If you are an advocate for equal rights among the sexes, this is a perfect way to show your support. Grab your friends and your anti-establishment rage and get started! Who can be a part of Equal Pay Day? While it does seem like a battle for women, anyone, and I do mean anyone, can join the battle for equal pay between men and women despite your gender. With 20 cents to make up for, we need as many people up for the battle as possible.

President Obama visits The Daily Show

President Obama visits The Daily Show President Obama on The Daily Show October 18, 2012Getty Images It was disappointing that Stewart, after spending the better part of his eighteenth season criticizing the softball questions the media often directs towards candidates, could not come up with better questions himself to ask the President. Even the phrasing of the questions was embarrassingly soft, as when he asked if President Obama thought he had a “stronger affirmative case for a second Barack Obama presidency or a stronger negative case for a Mitt Romney presidency,” or if he preferred a “melange?” The President predictably stated that he thought he had a good case for both, and then returned, again, to his talking points. I genuinely expected more from Jon Stewart. He can continue to insist that he’s just a comedian, and his political views clearly bias him in favor of Obama, but once you’ve won multiple Peabody awards, he can’t get away with simply referencing Joe Biden in a swimsuit when he interviews the President of the United States. (Although, that joke, and Obama’s quick and funny retort was, arguably, the high point of the interview.) Stewart’s questions could have been sharper and more direct, but with only three weeks until the election, you can’t blame the President for wanting to stay on script. He spoke in front of an audience that could not have been more receptive and enthusiastic if it was created in a Democrat chemist’s top secret laboratory. Obama’s closing statement, urging people to vote may have been the most controversial statement he made all evening, if for nothing else, because it inadvertently brings up one of the key issues of this election season: the Electoral College. While on The View, Mitt Romney’s wife, Ann, also unknowingly referenced the corrupt nature of the college. While speaking with the hosts, someone mentioned that in New York, there are not many political ads. Mrs. Romney answered, “Trust me, the audience members that are in swing states are sick of [political ads].” This statement highlights the already visible pandering to swing states, like Ohio, which of late, seems to be the only state in the Union that matters to the candidates. It is a shame that instead of visiting every state, candidates are forced to focus on only those that might win them strategic electoral votes. Even though it was mid school day and students were in class, there was a major turn out. Participating students walked around chanting  â€œBRING  BACK OUR GIRLS! BRING BACK OUR GIRLS!”  both outside on the academic podium, and inside the lecture centers, making sure their voices were heard. However, it was very disheartening to be stopped by individuals who asked “What is this for?” As Krystyna Jones of Pan Caribbean Association says, “No one should ask ‘What is this for?’” Kudos to the organizations involved in raising awareness. Please spread the message about this, and go and find out about it! You can sign this  petition to the Nigerian President  or this  one to the White House.
